Oculoplastic surgery is the application of plastic surgical techniques to procedures around the eye and orbit (the bony cavity containing the eye and optic nerve), as well as the tear ducts and associated facial structures such as the mid-face and forehead.

The anatomy is very complex and beautiful throughout this area, and the rich blood supply allows for a wide variety of tissue-sparing procedures to be designed. Typical problems dealt with include skin cancers on the eyelids or into the orbit, tumors or inflammations or infections in the orbit itself, droopy or puffy eyelids (upper or lower) or ectropion/entroption of the eyelid (rolling out or in).

Ptosis is a droopy eyelid (hanging down near or over the pupil) and dermatochalasis is excess skin and fat in the eyelid, sometimes obscuring vision also.  Blocked tear ducts can cause epiphora (watery eye), and depending on the location of the block, various operations are curative in most cases.

Oculplastic surgeons are subspecialized ophthalmologists who hold the function of your visual system first and foremost, and are the most qualified of any specialists to perform plastic surgery procedures around the eye.
